A Yokel's Lament

The folks up at the big house
have rooms enough to spare.
They hold enormous parties,
the gentlefolk in there.

Their guests arrive from far and near,
and rooms get full to bursting...
while every common lass and lad
dreams of such revels, thirsting

for a taste of carefree life.
For seldom may we sing or dance,
intent upon enjoyment,
and as for feasting...well, fat chance!

What is a farm boy meant to do,
but doff his cap... and dream anew?

Written for Mag 119, and inspired by Tess and Edward Hopper.

As for feasting, we've no chance!"

My favorite! This is wonderful and I'm wondering if the farm boy gets his dream.

    1. Thanks, Dana...but today I've edited one of those lines back to it's original, first draft, so I hope you still like it? And who knows, maybe somebody will comment on the pros and cons of each version, which could help me in future mitherings...

  5. I can see him there looking in at the brightly lit window and longing. Can’t he sneak in the back door and grab a chicken leg or two? Perhaps give the maid a peck on the cheek?

Go on - give him a chance.Give him a reason to sing and dance!

  10. I think that farm boy should just hold a barn dance, and whoop it up until the folks at the big house wish they could lose their dresses and monkey suits and join in!
